“We couldn’t be more please to debut on Amazon Prime with an audience of more than 150 million,” says Chrome producer and co-star Susan Goforth.

“Amazon treated us very well,” adds director Timothy Hines, “They bent over backward in a very challenging time to get our series properly launched. As filmmakers we were treated with respect and dignity. We have and continue to make a lot of money for them on our other movies, War of the Worlds The True Story, and 10 Days in a Madhouse, and this is the right fit for us.”

On the contrary, Hines and Goforth after initial interest, shied away from other streaming services like Netflix. Goforth explains, “Back in the day when Netflix was a home DVD delivery service on the way up they were very open to collaboration with moviemakers. But as they grew their focus narrowed to an elite few with massive control over the creative aspects of their content. We found that the deal we would see wasn’t going to benefit us nearly on the level Amazon was willing to provide.”

While Amazon has been on fire with shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag, Hanna, Tales From the Loop, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Man in the High Castle, Homecoming, Good Omens, Mozart in the Jungle, and more, Netflix has been in constant conflict with the powers in Hollywood such as Steven Spielberg over their perceived bending of the rules with the Cannes Film Festival which got them banned for two years. They have a very closed door inaccessible attitude toward all but a few creators.

There has been much controversy over the way Netflix reports its numbers and many say they are planting their thumb on the scale. According to the publication, The Motley Fool, “Netflix’s methodology for tracking viewership changed in Q4, in a major way. This shift appears to run counter to the recent promise from Netflix honcho Scott Stuber to provide ‘more transparency’ into its viewer metrics in 2020.

“Beginning last quarter, Netflix stopped defining a viewer as ‘anyone who watched 70% of a movie or one episode of a series. Instead, it now counts anyone who watched a particular title ‘for at least two minutes,’ regardless of program length.”

Hines says, “We partnered with Amazon over Netflix because of their massive encouragement of talent and product in a wide creative range. It’s a no brainer. Netflix is facing new platforms appearing from the major studios and audiences who are discovering the great product on Amazon in unprecedented numbers. Netflix is now facing real competition. Not just winning because they were essentially only one of two. I have no doubt that Amazon Prime with a hundred and fifty million viewers and growing, and with exciting new product like their great series, Upload, from The Office co-creator and creator of Parks and Recreation, Greg Daniels, Mad Dogs, Undone, Catastrophe, Homecoming with Julia Roberts, Bosch, A Very English Scandal, The Expanse, Forever and our Chrome: The Series, Amazon grows and continues to be the place to get your primary streaming entertainment.”
