Elk Grove, CA – June 10, 2020 – James Rutter Middle School in the Elk Grove Unified School District was awarded first place in the state ArcGIS competition. The school submitted one entry and was awarded a near-perfect score! Each year students enter the competition by completing a project about something in their home state. Participants demonstrate their ability to analyze, interpret, and present data in the form of a webpage or story map. High School and Middle School winners are chosen for each state that are then entered into the national competition.

This year the winning project for California Middle Schools was submitted by two 7th graders at James Rutter Middle School, Jaydon Do, and Leo Liang. The students submitted a project exploring the installation of water tunnels to the Bay-Delta and the debate surrounding the project. The students did an excellent job of showcasing what they were capable of as well as representing James Rutter Middle School. Jaydon and Leo will now go on to represent the state in the national competition, giving them the opportunity to win a trip to the 2020 Esri Education Conference in San Diego, California.

This achievement marks the third year in a row that a team from James Rutter Middle School has taken first place and showcased amazing projects in the ArcGIS state competition. The Elk Grove Unified School District is proud of all of these outstanding students demonstrating their amazing talents and skills.
