Why Ezekiel’s Temple Practices Differ from Levitical Law. Bloomington, Indiana. Westbow Press, 2019, 165 pages.

Dr. Nixon compares Ezekiel’s (future) Temple Ritual with ancient Levitical Practices. He solves several mysteries — What unites the Old and New Covenants (and how they interact); why is there no High Priest, no Day of Atonement, no Feast of Weeks, and no Feast of Trumpets in Ezekiel’s calendar. Holding fast to God’s literal word, his conclusions shake up our theology.

Consider this. The Ark of the Covenant is known to represent the earthly throne of God where His glory rested between the cherubim – it is the only seat in the Temple. Many realize when that Ark of the Covenant is re–found (or rebuilt), there will be huge impetus to rebuild a Temple. Few know that an imposter messiah will sit on that seat declaring himself to be God (2 Thessalonians 2:4). Fewer know after this, the real king Messiah returns to earth and builds Ezekiel’s Temple (Ezekiel 37:24–27 & 40–48). He also will declare Himself to be God — when He explains how He is one with God (Zechariah 14:9).

Formerly Dr. Nixon thought Messiah’s suffering caused to cease all central altar animal sacrifices. But seeing a resumption of the morning burnt offering — this forced Dr. Nixon to alter his theology and form an understanding as to why there is a partial return to old Temple Ritual. He concludes the cross only fulfils (and therefore causing to cease) 3 sacrifices: the evening burnt offering, and the two Day of Atonement offerings whose blood is sprinkled on the mercy seat. The latter two offerings are never eaten by an human; instead they are totally burned on an altar outside the camp (Leviticus 16:27; Hebrews 13:12–13). Therefore tabernacle typology teaches us that no human literally eats Christ’s flesh! Eating blood always has and still is forbidden (Deuteronomy 12:24; Leviticus 17:12; Acts 15:20)!

Christ is a High Priest in the heavenly temple where He presented His blood (Hebrews 9:11–14). On earth He is no priest at all (Hebrews 8:4). Therefore His blood is not to be found on the earthly mercy seat.

Loving God, Dr. Nixon spent hours preparing this book. (There are 34 well thought out tables!). Fearing man’s reaction, Dr. Nixon carefully backed each thought with scripture — thus at times the reading is tedious. A highlight in the book is the discussion of the contentious interpretations of the temple envisioned by Ezekiel as revealed by God. One common idea that there will be no future temple, no future animal sacrifice, because Christ’s death typically fulfilled them all.

But this book’s insights and conclusions pave the way for Christians to understand why God will (at some future date) return to Temple ritual, Temple worship and unfulfilled animal sacrifice.
