Shar Blendz: A Young Entrepreneur Making Strides
No school. No sports. No friends. The pandemic affected our lives in many ways during the last year. Although boredom and isolation were part of the pandemic-problems, they often led to creative ideas occasionally turning into entrepreneurial ventures like Shar Blendz. Founded during the pandemic by Shaurya, a 16-year-old high-schooler (and entrepreneur) this unique garage run barber shop brought value to the customers and community in a unique and viral way!
Garage beginnings!
It all started when Shaurya first attempted to cut his own hair by watching you-tube videos. Having high standards of perfection himself, he thought he did a good job on himself. He further honed his skills on his brother and dad by volunteering to give them haircuts. Being a perfectionist, next Shaurya invested in getting the right toolset and equipment that would allow him to create the most perfect fades, blends and more. Word got around the neighborhood and “customers” (including teenagers) started making appointments. Shaurya approached each haircut as a unique project demonstrating a lot of confidence as he built trust with his clients giving them consultancy on their hair. Delighted with the results, his customers turned into his regular clients. His neighborhood was grateful to have a place that is both convenient and safe. Ever since he started, Shaurya has had a steady increase in his clientele as his business continues to grow.
Anytime haircuts
A unique aspect of Shaurya’s business is the flexibility that he offers to his clients, something that most hairdressers and salons won’t offer. He will take a haircut appointment even at 6 am or 11 pm if that’s the time that works best for his clients. Flexibility worked for him too as he would often have school assignments to finish before he can give a haircut. This has been a busy summer for Shaurya as he manages 8-10 haircuts on certain days. Given the volume of requests, he has set up an online scheduling system for the appointments. In parallel, he is educating himself on ways to grow his business. What started out as just another way to kill boredom has now turned into a successful entrepreneurial venture that is also helping Shaurya save money for his car!
A business with a heart
Another noticeable aspect of Shaurya’s enterprise is how it helped jobseekers during the pandemic. Many people lost their jobs during the pandemic. Shaurya wanted to help them get back on track. He offered free and discounted haircuts to anyone who can show him a proof of an upcoming job interview.
When asked if he would call barbering his passion, Shaurya responds “Actually entrepreneurship is my passion!” This budding entrepreneur is certainly up to something with his (pandemic-born) enterprise!
