The new administration’s immigration reform plan focuses on keeping families together.

Abogada Nancy Reyes Guarderas of the Matian Firm | La Liga Defensora is scheduled to appear on California radio and TV stations to discuss what legal permanent residents seeking citizenship for themselves and their families should do right now to ensure the process is as quick and painless as possible.

Included in the new administration’s immigration reform agenda are a number of changes to the family-based immigration system that focus on keeping families together.

These reforms include clearing backlogs, eliminating lengthy green card wait times, increasing the number of per-country visa caps, and allowing immigrants to join their families in the U.S. as they wait for a green card to become available. The new bill also eliminates the so-called “3 and 10-year bars,” and other provisions that keep immigrant families apart.

The V Visa is the vehicle being introduced in the new immigration plan to help family members of U.S. Citizens (USC) and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) enter the U.S. while awaiting their priority date to become current and have an interview for their permanent residency and be able to reunite with their families here in the US.

The V Visa will grant immigrants a work authorization and lawful entry into the U.S. instead of waiting 5, 10 and even 20 years outside the U.S. However, the V visa is not available until after the USCIS approves the family petition submitted by the USC or LPR relative. This is why it’s imperative that USCs and LPRs act ASAP to claim their family’s spot in line ahead of the crowd. File those family petitions now!

Reyes said, “For years, we’ve seen families separated by the long wait times. This administration has made it a priority to focus on the reunification of families. I suggest that all USCs and LPRs start filing their family petitions now as there are still long processing times by USCIS to overcome.”

Nancy Reyes Guarderas is an expert on immigration rights and visas, as she has been advocating and guiding her clients through the immigration process since 1998.
