Data Backups – In the event of a disaster, whether that’s a data breach or human error, businesses need to have a plan to get the company back up and running right away.  Pay attention to the RPO (Recovery Point Objective), how much work time would be lost if it would have to restore from a backup, and the RTO (Recovery Time Objective), how long the company is down. With a solid system in place, it should only lose at most 5x minutes of work and be down for 10x minutes.

Data Protection – Companies should be sure to have safeguards in place to monitor who in the company has access to which data sources.  Companies might have access to files established for employees that have long left their firm.  Those same individuals could be sharing that data with their new employer.  Companies need to have a plan for what to do with employee-owned devices that might company emails. Stop Using RDP – Remote Desktop Protocol, the world’s most common remote access software has been compromised many times over. It would now be negligent to run any such application for users to log into remotely. Instead, they will need to utilize VPN because the data is encrypted, and it can have powerful security features like 2FA (described above).
